The US Fish & Wildlife service has finished their status review of the Rio Grande cutthroat trout and found that it is a candidate species to be listed under the Endangered Species Act. The finding however was that the fish is “Warranted but Precluded,” meaning that it should be listed and they will get around to listing it when they have the resources and time to do so.
When will this happen? That’s the big question and no one probably knows right now, but it won’t be any time soon. The USFWS prioritizes candidate species on a scale from 1 to 12, 1 being the worst. The RGCT was given a priority ranking of 9, meaning that it’s not particularly high on the list.
The status review document can be found here.
